He has been interviewed many times on local television, and has been heard on the radio for the past 20 years talking about the latest that dentistry has to offer. He has been a frequent contributor to the Odessa American. In fact, Dr. Rutherford was voted the "Best Dentist in Odessa" by the American Readers' Choice poll. An extensive article was written and Dr. Rutherford appeared on the front cover of the Permian Basin Pulse magazine. Dr. Rutherford was featured in Consumer Research Council's "Guide to Americas Top Dentist" in 2004, 2008, 2009 and again in 2010. The "Odessan" magazine also had Dr. Rutherford on its cover and included a very nice article on his practice.

Dr. Rutherford maintains an extensive program of advanced study, having over 400 hours of such continuing education in the past 3 years alone. (By contrast, dentist in Texas are required to attend only 12 hours per year.)

Dr. Rutherford grew up on the shores of Lake LBJ in central Texas, lettering in tennis and graduating Valedictorian of Marble Falls High School. After graduating from Texas A&M with honors, he attended the University of Texas Dental School at San Antonio, finishing in the top quarter of his class shortly before it was ranked as the number one dental school in the nation.

Dr. Rutherford is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, American Orthodontic Society. He is a Fellow of the Dental Organization of Conscious Sedation, an honor achieved by fewer than 2% of sedation dentist, and mentors other dentists in sedation techniques. He is also a Diplomat of the American Dental Implant Association, their highest level of recognition awarded to less than 1% of its member dentist.

His wife Vicki is a pharmacist. They have one son, Bryan, who as part of the "Teach for America", a national program which places teachers in underserved areas, taught 8th grade Algebra in Oakland, California for two years after graduating from Rice University. In his spare time, Dr. Rutherford enjoys fishing, reading, water sports, tennis, and is very active in his church.
